The Tao of good and evil

The concept of yin and yang is represented in a symmetrical rotational diagram that brings to mind a continuous cyclic movement. The principle of the continuous transformation of opposites seemed to me an appropriate metaphor for the cover of Zero. With the figures of the angel and the devil, it acquires a occidental flavour. However, I was unsure with which sex to represent good and evil. This is how I designed the concepts for both female and male. Look at the two different drawings: most people like the devil more, both in female and male version. Will it be a coincidence?

IL Tao del bene e del male

Il concetto di yin e yang viene rappresentato in un diagramma simmetrico rotazionale che richiama alla mente un movimento ciclico continuo. Il principio della continua trasformazione degli opposti mi pareva una metafora appropriata per la copertina di Zero. Con le figure dell’angelo e del diavolo, acquista un sapore occidentale. Tuttavia ero incerto con quale sesso rappresentare il bene e il male. Ho disegnato così i concetti sia al femminile che al maschile. Osservate i due diversi disegni: alla maggioranza delle persone piace più il diavolo, sia in forma femminile che in quella maschile. Sarà un caso?

Das Tao von Gut und Böse

Das Konzept Yin und Yang wird in einem symmetrischen Rotationsdiagramm dargestellt und erinnert an eine kontinuierliche zyklische Bewegung. Das Prinzip der ständigen Transformation der Gegensätze schien mir eine angemessene Metapher für das Cover von Zero zu sein. Mit den Figuren des Engels und des Teufels erhält es einen westlichen Geschmack. Ich war mir jedoch nicht sicher, mit welchem Geschlecht ich Gut und Böse darstellen sollte. So habe ich die Konzepte jeweils für beide Geschlechter entworfen. Schaut Euch die zwei verschiedenen Zeichnungen an: Die meisten Menschen bevorzugen den Teufel, sowohl in weiblicher als auch in männlicher Form. Soll es ein Zufall sein?
